Episode 24 - Why Does Medicine Ignore the Sodium-Potassium Pump in Post Exertional Malaise?, with guest Dr. Klaus Wirth

In this conversation, Dr. Klaus Wirth, a medical doctor and pharmacologist introduces his elegant integrative theory about the underlying causes of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).

He details how a loss of homeostasis affects blood flow, blood volume, sodium and calcium regulation and even damages mitochondria. The resulting decrease in energy production maintains ME/CFS as a chronic disease. This hypothesis may explain why avoidance of post exertional malaise (PEM) is so central to recovery.

Dr. Wirth uses his extensive background in drug discovery to test a drug that could restore function to the sodium/potassium ATPase and eliminate many downstream symptoms.

 Key Takeaways

  • The Role of Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptors: These receptors are critical for regulating blood flow to the brain, heart, and muscles during exercise. Desensitization of these receptors alters homeostasis.
  • Sympathetic Over-activation: Dr. Wirth believes the "fight or flight" system is overactive in ME/CFS patients, leading to exhaustion and a lack of recovery.
  • The Sodium-Potassium Pump: Discover why this vital cellular mechanism fails in ME/CFS, preventing muscles from functioning properly.
  • Mitochondrial Toxicity: Calcium overload inside cells can lead to direct toxicity within the mitochondria.
  • Blood Flow vs. Blood Volume: Explore the dual challenge of reduced circulation and inadequate blood volume in chronic illness.
  • The Power of Integration: Combining diverse research lines (from cardiovascular health to immunology) creates a more complete picture of ME/CFS.
