What is repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)?
•   rTMS involves placing a coil against the scalp that emits repeated magnetic pulses, targeting specific brain regions.
•   These pulses can either excite or inhibit neuronal activity, depending on the frequency used.
•   It’s non-invasive (does not require surgery, implants or medications) and is usually performed in outpatient clinics.
•   It is increasingly covered by public and private health insurance, making it an accessible treatment option in most developed countries.
Why is this important?
•   rTMS promotes neuroplasticity, helping the brain rewire itself. This makes rTMS a potentially useful treatment in a wide range of conditions beyond the traditional uses in depression and OCD. It is now being trialed in stroke rehabilitation, Parkinson’s disease, and is relevant to this community, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and long COVID-related brain fog.
•   As we learn more about activating different brain regions, rTMS is being fine-tuned to personalize treatment protocols for individual patients.
Dr. Corlier is a pioneer in the use of rTMS in ME/CFS and FM. Join us to learn what she is finding and bring your questions to ask her.

About the Presenters
Juliana Corlier, PhD
Juliana Corlier is an Assistant Professor at the UCLA Neuromodulation Division, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, David Geffen School of Medicine.
Throughout her training, Dr. Corlier has applied advanced quantitative analysis techniques to work with brain imaging data, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) from clinical patients, with the goal of refining diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to neurological and psychiatric conditions.
Her current research focuses on the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of depression, chronic pain and other conditions. Her particular interest is the use of neuromodulation techniques to address centralized pain conditions such as fibromyalgia that are frequently co-morbid with mood disorders. In her talk, she will present recent findings on the use of rTMS for treating fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

Eleanor Stein, MD
Dr. Stein is a physician, psychiatrist, and expert in helping people with ME, CFS, FM, environmental sensitivities, long COVID and chronic pain recover their health and joy in life.
Through her 35-year illness journey, reading thousands of scientific papers, and working with thousands of patients, she has developed a unique, science-based approach to healing using self-management, neuroplasticity, hormesis, and, most recently...quantum biology.
